New Year, New Smile: How to Set Oral Health Resolutions

Setting clear goals helps patients build routines that can lead to lifelong oral health improvements. Goals like brushing twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and flossing daily are simple yet effective in maintaining oral hygiene. By linking these habits to daily activities, such as brushing right after breakfast or flossing before bedtime stories, patients can make these practices routine and part of their everyday lives.

But why is setting a goal so important? Good oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of cavities and gum disease. Healthy gums can also lower inflammation throughout the body. A healthy mouth is a healthy body.

One great success story from the past year involves several of our patients who initially required Cavitron (ultrasonic) cleanings due to heavy plaque buildup, tartar, and gum inflammation. At the start, these patients needed deeper, more frequent cleanings to manage their oral health.

Through consistent dental visits, improved home care routines (brushing twice daily, flossing regularly, and using recommended products), and guidance from our dental team, we saw a significant transformation over time. Their gum health improved, inflammation decreased, and plaque buildup became much more manageable.

As a result, many of these patients have transitioned to routine, traditional cleanings—an important milestone that reflects healthier gums and better overall oral hygiene.

If you have some milestones you want to hit with your oral health this year, our team is here to help! We teach proper brushing and flossing techniques and create a fun, welcoming atmosphere that can help reduce dental anxiety and associate oral care with positive experiences.

But this doesn’t just stop with us, parents can help out at home too! Especially for kids who have trouble brushing their teeth, we encourage parents to turn it into a game, even adding in apps such as Happy Kids Timer, to encourage proper brushing.

And don’t forget to schedule your child’s yearly cleaning, this is where we can help assess if there may be any additional problems or issues. We hope to see you soon!
